CHAPTER 18

Matriol watched as the fat, old man walked again around the perimeter of the chain-link fence. The building would be big enough to cater for the cages within the overflowing hold of the ship.

He was still full from his last dozen victims, but one could always indulge in some dessert. He chuckled and the old man proved himself even more useless. His hearing didn’t pick up the threat mere meters from his heavy-footed patrol.

He rose from the shadows and stopped directly in front of the ‘guard’, as much a stupid term on the ground as it was up in the clouds. The man screamed and clutched his chest.

Matriol laughed loud enough to echo around the abandoned buildings. It was incredible how fragile they were, how easily and in how many ways their bodies could break and die.

He reached forward, fingers elongating and sharpening into points. They pushed through the skin and then the skull of the man. Brain and blood siphoning through the digits, filling him to beyond full.

Matriol would curl up in the darkness of one of the buildings before returning to the ship where his heart still called, still begged to be returned. There was no point in letting the Guardian know the true extent of his growing power, or the fun he was having.
